Campaigning for Zarina Anwar by Cllr Dave Baigent

Zarina Anwar strongly believes that the people of Kings Hedges need a better life and that this can be achieved by raising their income. One way to do this is to pay them a Cambridge Weighting Allowance and for her and Dave this is a campaign priority.
Zarina works as a forensic scientist for a public service.
Zarina is a trade unionist: a member of Prospect.
Zarina lives the same struggles as other members of the working class in Kings Hedges.
Zarina left the Labour party because they are appeasing the right wing, no longer representing the interests of the most vulnerable in society, and cutting public services and the NHS

Why is Zarina Anwar standing for election in Kings Hedges

I’m fed up with councillorswho don’t live here making decisions behind closed doors. They only show up when they want our votes, never when our community needs them. Our local issues go deeper than potholes and litter. Kings Hedges is one of the most deprived wards in Cambridge, and the impact is felt every day. Food bank usage is at a record high, and many families are struggling just to get by.
Our young people also have nowhere dedicated to go, no safe space to learn new skills, build confidence or simply have fun. In a city as wealthy as Cambridge, this gap shouldn’t exist. Residents here aren’t asking for special treatment. We’re asking for fairness, investment and opportunities that match the needs of
our community. It’s time to close the gap and ensure Kings Hedges gets the support it deserves. I want to give Kings Hedges a voice on the council and empower our community to decide on what we need.

Council Meeting 19th March

Over the last few weeks, Cambridge Labour Party have agreed to support a new Unitary Authority to replace the City Council in 2028. The distribution of Cllr’s on the new authority, will ensure that City Cllr’s are outvoted by Cllr’s representing South Cambridgeshire. Cambridge City has very different needs to South Cambridgeshire and this imbalance of power could well result in council tax being diverted to South Cambridgeshire.

On the 19th March, Cambridge Labour de facto supported a Development Company that will take over our planning process. The plan by Development Corporation to take over our planning service, Challenges Peter Freeman’s pledge ‘to work with us and not do it to us.’ This put everything reported below about Peter Freeman’s presentation in doubt.

The big question is are The Labour Party selling Cambridge City residents into subservience?

Cambridge Growth Compan

The Performance, Assets and Strategy Overview and Scrutiny Committee 9-12-25
Peter Freeman and his team came to this scrutiny meeting to explain about Cambridge Growth Company. Key in their presentation was that they intend ‘to work with us and not do it to us.’

Some of the points that were discussed/explained were

  • A team of high quality experts are being put together.
  • They will take a holistic view to ensure developments are worth living in.
  • Developments will be an exemplar of sustainable growth.
  • An  emphasis that infrastructure should be planned and built first/preferably before any development.
  • Will involve unlocking travel/transport difficulties.
  • Working alongside the local plan.
  • Geography will mainly be Greater Cambridge but not exclusively so.
  • Potentially along the OxCam Corridor.
  • After the May elections there will be consultations.
  • Transparent format with an aim for all party buy in.

The important points that were taken from this and earlier discussions, were that there is a sense of integrity emulating from Peter and his team. This in particular was about two related points

  • that infrastructure is not a bolt on requirement that will be a burden to developers. It will be integral and oversight will ensure developers build a place for people to live.
  • that the team will be professionals with reputations to uphold – their overview not involve compromise.

Food Waste Collections

Government legislation requires that all councils make arrangements for food waste collections. Over the course of 2026 City Council will roll out containers for food waste collections.

By recycling your food waste, you will help cut down the amount of waste that ends up in landfill or other disposal sites. Food waste that is sent to landfill doesn’t harmlessly break down. It has a big impact on the environment as it rots and releases methane – a harmful greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
